Can you get addicted to CBD?

Cannabidiol (CBD) is one of the main active components of the hemp plant. This natural product is sought after for its many health benefits. Its numerous virtues are recognized and approved by the World Health Organization (WHO). But can you become addicted to CBD ? Find the answers to this question in this dedicated article.

What is CBD?

Cannabidiol is often associated with marijuana. Yet, CBD is one of the many components present in the composition of the cannabis plant. The cannabidiol molecule is notably found in high concentration with a relatively low THC level in certain varieties of hemp, particularly in the Cannabis Sativa L. plant. Marijuana, for its part, is essentially composed of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).

For several years, CBD has been the subject of numerous scientific studies. Specific research notably demonstrates that the natural substance derived from the hemp plant possesses, among other things, pain-relieving, anti-inflammatory, anti-emetic properties, and is effective against stress and anxiety. The product is therefore recognized as an effective natural remedy for various everyday ailments. It is also recommended for relieving symptoms of certain chronic conditions.

The properties of CBD

CBD is the second active component of hemp, after tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). These two natural substances have similar properties. However, their effects on the body are completely different.

Indeed, THC has euphoric effects. This product can alter behavior and reasoning. This is not the case with CBD. Quite the contrary, the cannabidiol molecule concentrates most of the health benefits of cannabis. Several of its virtues are demonstrated by specific scientific studies. Moreover, its beneficial properties are recognized and approved by the WHO. This notably explains why CBD is legally authorized for cultivation and use in several European countries such as France.

Furthermore, it has been scientifically proven that THC is the cause of marijuana addiction. Indeed, this cannabinoid acts by promoting the production of dopamine in the body. This creates an addictive sensation of pleasure and well-being.

The results of various scientific observations and experiments also demonstrate that CBD has no addictive effects. This also constitutes one of the reasons why the product is legally authorized for use in certain countries.

How can cannabis addiction be explained?

Addiction or dependence on a substance refers to an irrevocable, pathological need for the intake of the product in question, without which the metabolism or the brain cannot function properly. It is, therefore, very difficult to break free from an addictive substance.

The most common examples are addiction to nicotine, alcohol, and drugs. Cannabis can also create dependence. Yet these products have harmful effects on health. Prolonging their consumption sustains the addiction and increases the intensity of the product's side effects.

Various scientific studies prove that THC is the active component of cannabis that causes dependence on the product. CBD does not create addiction. However, over the course of treatments, consumers may develop a tolerance to cannabidiol. Their metabolism becomes accustomed to the product's effects. In this case, they may need to increase their dose to achieve the desired effects.

What is the difference between addiction and tolerance?

Addiction and tolerance are mechanisms by which the metabolism absolutely demands a given substance to restore a certain balance. However, addiction has a negative connotation. Tolerance, on the other hand, does not necessarily evoke a need in a negative sense. This concept can be likened to tolerance in general.

Concretely, the body can develop a form of tolerance to a very specific product. This occurs particularly following prolonged use of the substance in question. It could be a medication or a natural remedy such as CBD. Nevertheless, this does not necessarily imply adverse effects.

On the contrary, CBD would exert several beneficial actions for health. Furthermore, the consumer can stop their CBD treatment at any time without experiencing an uncontrollable craving. In the event of stopping cannabidiol consumption, the consumer accustomed to the product also does not exhibit any constraining physical symptoms.

Research has even established that CBD would be effective in the context of tobacco, alcohol, and cannabis withdrawal. Indeed, this cannabinoid would notably help relieve the symptoms of substance craving. This considerably helps people in the withdrawal phase not to give in to temptation.

In summary, CBD does not create dependence. However, some people may develop a tolerance to CBD. This does not necessarily imply an irrevocable need for the product as in the case of addiction. The difference between addiction or dependence and tolerance or habituation lies precisely in this fact. Furthermore, in the event of stopping CBD treatment, consumers can live normally, without any risk of experiencing symptoms of product withdrawal.
