Which CBD for neuropathic pain?

Cannabidiol (CBD) is one of the many cannabinoids found in the composition of hemp. The natural product concentrates most of the benefits of the cannabis plant on health. Various scientific studies notably prove the product's potential to help relieve neuropathic pain. So, among the forms of cannabidiol available on the dedicated market, which CBD for neuropathic pain ?

How does CBD act on neuropathic pain?

No scientific study has yet proven the effectiveness of taking cannabidiol to make neuropathic pain disappear. However, various clinical trials make it possible to determine the contribution of CBD to relieving neuropathic pain.

The analgesic potential of CBD

A study conducted in 2012 notably demonstrated the potential of cannabinoids, particularly CBD, to reduce spinal pain and headaches. Positive effects were observed in all participants after taking CBD. This research particularly highlights the actions of CBD on the CB1 and CB2 receptors of the endocannabinoid system.

CBD, an effective natural painkiller and anti-stress agent

An experiment carried out by Professor Ryan Quinlan Skarbek's team highlighted the effects of CBD on the intensity of pain related to fibromyalgia. This same research also established that cannabidiol significantly reduces anxiety and thus helps improve patients' quality of life. Indeed, CBD has anti-stress effects. The substance derived from hemp notably stimulates the production of dopamine and serotonin. These neurotransmitters are responsible for well-being, good mood, and relaxation.

Furthermore, the cannabinoid would help significantly reduce the side effects of medications prescribed to treat neuropathic pain.

The anti-inflammatory effects of CBD

Neuropathic pain can be explained by inflammation in the tissues affecting the nerves. Several scientific studies notably demonstrate the anti-inflammatory properties of CBD. Indeed, the molecule derived from the hemp plant acts by significantly limiting the reactions of immune system cells in response to aggression. This has the effect of limiting, or even avoiding, the symptoms of inflammation.

The results of a specific study, published in June 2012, notably highlight the beneficial effects of cannabidiol against inflammation and neuropathic pain.

It should be noted that CBD treatment must be carried out in addition to the basic medical treatment. Indeed, cannabidiol alone cannot treat chronic neuropathic pain.

Which form of CBD should be used to treat neuropathic pain?

CBD is available in various forms in specialized stores. For treating neuropathic pain, the following formats are the most effective and practical:

CBD oil

CBD oil is a product obtained from a vegetable oil base enriched with CBD. There are notably different types of CBD oil, including:

  • Full Spectrum CBD oils: this type of product contains all the components of hemp, namely terpenes, flavonoids, and cannabinoids, including THC at a regulated level below 0,2%;
  • Broad Spectrum CBD oils: these are vegetable oils containing CBD as well as the other components of cannabis but without THC;
  • CBD isolates: these are vegetable oils enriched with pure CBD molecules, without other ingredients.

Through the entourage effect, CBD oils formulated with the other components of hemp, in addition to CBD, provide sustained effects. Indeed, other cannabinoids such as cannabigerol (CBG) and cannabinol (CBN) reinforce the properties of CBD. These substances also exert their own benefits in the body. The same applies to terpenes and flavonoids.

You can also find oils with different CBD concentrations at dedicated stores: ranging from 5% to 40%.

CBD oil is taken in particular sublingually. This method of administration allows for rapid effects to be felt. You can also consume CBD oil by ingestion, in your daily meals and drinks. Finally, this type of product is also used topically,to be applied to the skin,at the level of the area to be treated.

CBD infusions

CBD herbal tea is generally made from CBD flowers or fruits. CBD tea is formulated from CBD leaves. These drinks are effective in the treatment of neuropathic pain.

Not only, the product acts in the endocannabinoid system but also has anti-stress and anxiety effects. CBD infusions therefore contribute to improving the quality of life of people who suffer from neuropathic pain while acting as a painkiller.

CBD capsules

CBD capsules are particularly suitable for consumption and especially easy to dose. These capsules containing cannabidiol powder are therefore suitable for daily use to treat chronic neuropathic pain.

CBD creams

Neuropathic pain is generally localized at the level of a specific part of the body. CBD cream allows for targeted treatment of pain, for optimal effectiveness.

You can also find other forms of topical products from sellers of legal CBD in France. You can in particular obtain balm, gel, ointment with CBD against neuropathic pain.

What dosage of CBD for neuropathic pain?

It should be noted that tolerance to cannabidiol varies considerably depending on metabolism. There is therefore no precise dosage to follow. The amount of CBD to take differs according to the treatment, the needs of each person and sensitivity to CBD.

However,as an indication, specialists have established that the daily dose of cannabidiol not to exceed is about 200 mg. Furthermore, the table below shows the amount of CBD to take per 20 kg of body weight according to the intensity of the pain :

Pain intensityDaily CBD dosage to take in mg
Mild10
Moderate12
Severe25
Daily CBD dosage to take (mg) per 20 kg of body weight depending on the intensity of neuropathic pain

The doses indicated in this table are provided for informational purposes only. To ensure an exact quantity suited to your personal needs, seek the advice of your doctor or a cannabidiol expert. Specialists generally recommend starting CBD treatment with a minimal dose and then gradually adjusting the dosage until the desired effects are achieved.
