How to convert CBD into THC?
Cannabidiol (CBD) and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) are the two main cannabinoids found in the composition of hemp. These substances have similar structures but also display significant differences. Following a scientific experiment, experts were able to convert CBD into THC. The question is: how to transform CBD into THC?
The Differences Between CBD and THC
THC and CBD are the two main active components of the cannabis plant. These molecules have very similar structures. They are notably responsible for the calming, relaxing, pain-relieving, and anti-inflammatory properties of cannabis hemp. This plant has notably been used to treat various ailments for centuries.
However, one important characteristic distinguishes THC from CBD. Tetrahydrocannabinol notably has psychoactive and addictive effects. This product is therefore considered a narcotic strictly prohibited from production, sale, and use. Its use within the context of medical treatment, under special prescription from the attending physician, is authorized in certain countries. Nevertheless, the use of this natural substance derived from the cannabis plant remains strictly regulated.
CBD neither alters behavior nor reasoning and does not cause dependence. This notably explains why the product is legalized for therapeutic use and for well-being in several European countries, including France.
Can CBD Transform into THC?
Raw CBD cannot naturally transform into THC. Some consumers notably wonder whether the THC level in CBD extracts (leaves, flowers, fruits) can increase if they store the product over a long period. The answer is no. Products retain their original concentration, or even lose some of their properties over time.
Nevertheless, when subjected to specific treatments, the cannabidiol molecule can become a derivative of tetrahydrocannabinol.
A study conducted in 2021 by a team of American specialists notably suggests that CBD transforms into THC during its passage through the stomach. The experiment notably concluded that CBD can transform into active THC derivatives, namely delta-9-THC and delta-8-THC.
Later, another team of researchers performed urine tests after CBD consumption. Their observation notably revealed a minimal amount of THC derivatives. Indeed, they were able to assess a percentage of 0.08% delta-9-THC and approximately 0.05% delta-8-THC relative to the total dose of cannabidiol ingested. Consequently, these results demonstrate that only an insignificant amount of CBD transforms into THC during digestion.
Furthermore, specialists also performed blood tests after ingestion of 1500 mg of CBD. The results revealed an infinitesimal volume of THC. Moreover, the participants reported no psychoactive effects. However, it takes a THC level higher than 2% to feel euphoric effects and changes in behavior and reasoning.
By What Process Does CBD Transform into THC?
Scientists have established that cannabidiol can transform into THC through isomerization. This method involves diluting CBD with specific acids to create a chemical reaction. A small portion of the cannabidiol then transforms into THC derivatives.
Isomerization is a chemical process that requires the use of specific tools and chemical solutions. It can only be carried out by experts. It is impossible to reproduce the experiment at home.
Since gastric juices are acidic substances, it is perfectly normal for a portion of ingested CBD to convert into THC derivatives during the molecule's passage through the stomach. The experts who conducted the 2021 study notably performed an in vitro test. To do this, they immersed the CBD molecule in simulated gastric fluid. The solution replicates the effects of gastric juices in the stomach. An isomerization process then occurs, converting a very small amount of CBD into THC derivatives.
In conclusion, there is currently no known common method to completely convert CBD into THC or vice versa. As a reminder, THC is a drug. Its exploitation, possession, and use are severely punished with several years of imprisonment and a fine that can amount up to 7,500,000 euros. Thus, the conversion of CBD into THC is a practice strictly prohibited by law, in addition to being extremely dangerous. Indeed, the manipulation requires the use of toxic solutions that are not accessible to the general public.
