Can you buy CBD in pharmacies in France

Cannabidiol (CBD) is one of the many cannabinoids found in the composition of the hemp plant. The product has many health benefits. It has no intoxicating effect, unlike THC. So, can you buy CBD in a pharmacy in France?

The Specifics of CBD Doctor

CBD, scientifically known as "cannabidiol," is one of the many components of cannabis. It is notably found in large quantities in Cannabis Sativa L.. Various scientific studies prove that this natural substance possesses numerous beneficial properties for health. CBD is notably said to have the following effects:

  • pain-relieving: the cannabidiol molecule binds to receptors of the endocannabinoid system to reduce pain perception;
  • anti-inflammatory: CBD is said to influence the reactions of immune system cells to limit, or even avoid, the symptoms of inflammation:
  • anti-stress: CBD is said to have the potential to promote the production of neurotransmitters responsible for well-being, relaxation, and good mood. It would thus help combat stress and anxiety.
  • relaxing: CBD is said to stimulate the secretion of melatonin. This hormone regulates the wake/rest cycle of the body and mind. It also helps optimize the quality of restorative sleep;
  • regulators of the central nervous system: CBD is said to rebalance the functioning of the central nervous system. It can thus help combat mental disorders;
  • neuroprotective: cannabidiol would be effective in preventing neurodegenerative diseases.

Scientific studies are ongoing to reveal other beneficial effects of CBD on the body.

Is CBD a medication?

The therapeutic benefits of CBD are recognized by specialists and by the WHO. However, to date, cannabidiol does not have the status of a medication in France. Products containing cannabidiol are rather considered wellness products, in the same way as dietary supplements. Indeed, the cannabidiol molecule does not cure any disease. The cannabinoid rather helps relieve everyday ailments and the symptoms of certain pathologies.

However, certain properties of CBD have been used by experts to develop medications. Patients suffering from epilepsy and multiple sclerosis may notably be prescribed cannabidiol medications. These products are provided exclusively in pharmacies with a prescription issued by the attending physician.

Is the sale of CBD legal in France?

French legislation concerning the exploitation of CBD has undergone many changes over the years. The cultivation, sale, and use of CBD for health have always been legally authorized. However, regulations have changed considerably, particularly following the progress of research on the cannabinoid.

Nevertheless, on December 2022, the Council of State announced the official legalization of CBD throughout France. Thus, the production, sale, and use of cannabidiol are approved by French law, provided that current regulations are strictly respected. The standards to be respected notably include:

  • the THC content limit at 0,3% in CBD plant extracts and CBD products: beyond this legal threshold, THC can cause euphoria and create cannabis addiction;
  • the exclusive use of Cannabis Sativa L.: this variety of cannabis has a relatively low THC content and a high concentration of CBD;
  • the use of CBD for therapeutic purposes and for well-being.

Furthermore, it should be noted that CBD sellers in a physical store or online, on the web, must necessarily hold a specific license for this activity. The official document certifies the legality of the business and the compliance of products with quality and safety standards.

Is CBD available in pharmacies in France?

CBD medications for treating the symptoms of epilepsy and multiple sclerosis are approved by the ANSM (French National Agency for Medicines and Health Products Safety). These products are available in pharmacies. However, patients cannot obtain them without a medical prescription.

Please also note that since January 24, 2022, you can purchase CBD products in pharmacies. Indeed, on that date, health authorities granted their approval to allow pharmacies to sell CBD products. However, the activity is governed by specific restrictions, including:

  • the possession of a special authorization issued by the French State;
  • the THC content limit in the CBD product at 0,3%;
  • the strict prohibition on touting the therapeutic and medical benefits of cannabidiol products;
  • the pharmacist's ability to advise consumers on the use of CBD products – dosage, method of administration, frequency of use, etc.).

Pharmacies with a physical storefront or an online store that meet all these conditions are authorized to sell CBD products.
