Who can take CBD?

Cannabidiol (CBD) is one of the main active components of the hemp plant. This natural substance has many health benefits, some of which are proven by science. However, its use is subject to a few contraindications that you absolutely need to know about. Taking cannabidiol is notably restricted for certain categories of people. So, who can take CBD?

The health benefits of CBD

Unlike tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), CBD is not psychoactive and does not create dependence. Instead, the cannabinoid integrates several therapeutic virtues. The substance is said to have notably the following effects:

  • anti-pain: CBD would act by inhibiting the sensation of pain;
  • anti-inflammatory: the cannabidiol molecule would limit the reactions of immune cells to external aggression factors. Thus, the natural product reduces, or even prevents, inflammation;
  • neuroprotective: CBD would have the potential to prevent neurodegenerative diseases;
  • regulators of the digestive system: cannabidiol would have antiemetic actions and relieve contractions of the small intestine;
  • anti-stress: CBD would stimulate the production of serotonin and dopamine. These neurotransmitters are commonly called "happiness, well-being, and good mood hormones";
  • relaxant: cannabidiol would also promote the secretion of melatonin. This substance regulates the circadian rhythm or biological clock, responsible for balancing the wake/rest cycle of the body and mind. CBD thus combats insomnia and other sleep disorders. The natural product derived from hemp would also help optimize the quality of restorative sleep.

Specific scientific studies also prove that CBD would inhibit the development of cancers and tumors. Specialists are continuing research to highlight other effects of CBD in the body.

The consumption or use of CBD is notably recommended to relieve certain everyday ailments. The substance is especially advised to soothe migraines, menstrual pain, muscle pain, joint pain, etc. The natural product is also recommended as a complement to the basic treatment of certain chronic diseases. Doctors notably suggest taking CBD flower to support treatments for multiple sclerosis, fibromyalgia, osteoarthritis, and Crohn's disease.

Is CBD legal in France?

Cannabidiol is recognized by the World Health Organization as a natural, non-narcotic remedy. French authorities also consider CBD a wellness product. To date, cannabidiol products are not considered a medication in France.

Furthermore, the law governing the use of CBD in France has undergone significant changes over the years. However, the announcement by the Council of State on 29 November 2022 officializes the legalization of cannabidiol. Nevertheless, it is important to recall the regulations to follow. Among the legal provisions in force, one can notably note:

  • the limit of the THC level in hemp plant extracts and in CBD products to 0,2%: beyond this legal threshold, THC can exert its euphoric and addictive effects;
  • the exclusive use of Cannabis Sativa L. for extracting cannabidiol: due to its relatively low THC content and high CBD concentration, this cannabis variety is the only one authorized for cultivation in the European Union;
  • the use of CBD for therapeutic purposes and for well-being only.

Failure to comply with these regulations is subject to strict penalties. The consumer notably risks a prison sentence accompanied by a fine and sometimes community service.

The contraindications related to the use of CBD

Inappropriate use of cannabidiol can cause side effects that are more or less severe or expose the consumer to significant dangers.

CBD can cause side effects or adverse reactions. These undesirable consequences are notably due to overdose, interactions of cannabidiol with one or more medications, or poor-quality product. Among the effects observed, one can cite:

  • digestive problems: manifesting as diarrhea, constipation, vomiting, nausea, appetite disorders, etc.;
  • drying of bodily secretions: in the most common cases, most consumers feel dry mouth or dry eyes. This is explained by the effects of CBD on mucous membranes.

Some consumers may experience other side effects.

The usage restrictions of CBD

In general, CBD (cannabidiol) is considered safe for most adults when taken at appropriate doses. However, the adverse effects of CBD concern specific users. The following categories of people would notably be better off considerably limiting their daily dose of CBD, or even avoiding cannabidiol:

  • people who have increased sensitivity to CBD;

  • people who have issues in the digestive system, and especially those who have hepatitis and cirrhosis.
