How to use CBD oil?

CBD oil can be used in different ways depending on your preferences and the effects you are looking for. So how to use CBD oil to enjoy all its health benefits? This dedicated guide details the information you need to know for proper CBD use.

What is CBD oil?

CBD oil is a product derived from hemp or Cannabis Sativa L. The substance contains cannabidiol (CBD), one of the many active compounds of the plant. Unlike tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), CBD has no psychoactive effects. The cannabinoid does not cause euphoria and does not lead to cannabis addiction.

CBD oil is made by extracting the cannabidiol molecule from the cannabis plant. The CBD is then diluted with a natural vegetable carrier oil. The producers generally use olive oil or hemp seed oil.

Cannabidiol oil is often used as a dietary supplement to support general health. The product would also help to reduce the symptoms of certain diseases, including anxiety, the pain,inflammation and epilepsy. However, it is important to note that research on the potential benefits of CBD oil is still limited. Scientific studies are continuing to confirm the demonstrated benefits of CBD. New research aims to reveal other virtues of CBD.

The different varieties of CBD oils

There are several varieties of CBD oils. These products differ in terms of CBD concentration, extraction method, type of carrier oiland quality. Here are some of the main varieties of CBD oils:

The varieties of CBD oils according to their composition

CBD oil may have different compositions. We notably distinguish:

  • full spectrum CBD oil (Full Spectrum): this oil contains CBD,other cannabinoids, terpenes and flavonoids present in the cannabis plant. Following the entourage effect, full spectrum CBD oil may have beneficial synergistic actions on health. This type of CBD oil generally contains a small amount of THC (<0,3%) which may be detectable during drug screening tests ;
  • broad spectrum CBD oil (Broad Spectrum): this oil contains all the compounds of the full spectrum, except THC. It constitutes the best alternative for those who do not want to take risks with THC detection ;
  • isolated CBD oil or CBD isolate : this oil contains only CBD, extracted from the cannabis plantand purified. It shows no trace of other compounds. It is often used by those seeking a precise dose of CBD.

It is important to note that the quality and purity of CBD oils can vary considerably depending on the manufacturer. It is therefore important to choose high-quality products and to buy from reliable sources.

The categories of CBD oil according to their concentration

The concentration of CBD oil can vary considerably depending on the product and brand. In general, the concentration of CBD oil is indicated as a percentage (%).

The most common concentrations on the market are 5%, 10%, 20%, 30% and 40%. There are also higher concentrations for experienced users.

Concentration is one of the most important factors to take into account when choosing a CBD oil.

The different types of CBD oil according to the extraction method

There are several methods of extracting CBD oil from the hemp plant. The most commonly used extraction methods to produce CBD oil are the following:

  • solvent extraction: using a solvent like ethanol or butane to extract CBD and other cannabinoids from the hemp plant. This extraction method is efficient and relatively inexpensive. However, it can leave solvent residues in the oil and can therefore affect its purity ;
  • extraction with food-grade vegetable oil: generally using olive oil to extract CBD fromthe hemp plant. This process is relatively simple and inexpensive. However, it requires more time than solvent extraction. Food-grade vegetable oil is also a safe and healthy substance for ingestion ;
  • supercritical CO2 extraction: using carbon dioxide at high pressure to extract CBD and other cannabinoids fromthe hemp plant. This method is costly but it is also the safest and most effective in terms of purity. CO2 extraction also allows recovering a wide range of compounds fromthe hemp plant. The process is therefore ideal for the production of full spectrum or Broad Spectrum CBD oil.
  • steam extraction: using water vapor to extract CBD and other components fromthe hemp plant. This method is innovative and uncommon. The process preserves the natural properties of the plant.

The extraction method is generally indicated in the description or on the product label.

The different methods of administering CBD oil

Here are some common ways to use CBD oil:

Sublingual administration

Sublingual administration is the most common method for using CBD oil. You can place a few drops of CBD oil, corresponding to the recommended dosage for the treatment, under your tongue. Let the oil be absorbed by the oral mucous membranes for about 60 seconds before swallowing it with a large glass of water. Sublingual intake offers rapid effects, within 1 to 2 minutes after absorption of the product into the body.

Topical application

You can also apply CBD oil directly onto your skin to relieve muscle or joint pain. Simply massage a small amount of CBD oil onto the affected area until it is absorbed under the epidermis. This use allows a targeted and in-depth action.

Inhalation by vaporization

You can also inhale CBD oil by using a vaporizer or an electronic cigarette. This method is fast and effective, but it requires the purchase of additional equipment. You can find the device required for this use from a retailer specializing in the sale of legal CBD. Wellness product sellers also offer this type of product.

Adding to food or drinks

CBD oil can be added to food or drinks to facilitate its consumption. You can add the drops corresponding to the prescribed amount for the treatment to your coffee, tea, smoothie, salad or other foods. This method of administration facilitates dosing and taking CBD.

Taken by ingestion, CBD takes between 1 to 2 hours to exert its actions in the body. Indeed, the molecule is absorbed via the digestive mucous membranes. You must therefore wait for digestion time to enjoy the effects of the product.

The dosage of CBD oil

It is important to note thatthe optimal dose of CBD varies from one person to another. The amount of CBD to take depends notably on metabolic factors. Indeed, the actions of cannabidiol vary according to weight, the severity of the medical conditionand individual sensitivity. It is therefore recommended to start with a low dose. You must increase gradually the dosage based on results and effects felt.

As a general rule, it is recommended to take between 10 and 50 mg of CBD per day. However, make sure to refer to the dosage instructions on the product that you are using. Furthermore, consult your doctor before starting to use CBD products if you are taking other medications. Likewise if you have underlying health problems.

The following table presents the daily dose of CBD to take according to the intensity of the symptoms to be treated, per 10 kg of body weight :
